Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service

"Focusing on improving our services to the public is of great importance to us in Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. We therefore look forward with great enthusiasm to the opportunities presented by the Local Area Agreement. The ability to work even more closely with partners across the county, to deliver ever higher quality services to the public, is something that we intend to support with all of our efforts.”

Frank Swann
Chief Fire Officer

A brief history

A row of fire engines

The Service as it exists now was formed in 1974 when the City of Nottingham Fire Brigade and the Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade were merged. Since 1998, when Nottingham became a separate authority to Nottinghamshire, the Service has been run by a joint Fire and Rescue Authority, made up of councillors from both Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.

Our workforce, our strength

The Service currently has 12 wholetime and 13 retained fire stations, staffed by 575 wholetime and 375 retained firefighters. They are supported by over 160 non-uniformed support staff and 30 control room operators.

In 2007 our firefighters responded to 6,664 calls, which included over 800 house fires, 351 other building fires, 1,224 vehicle fires and 2,938 non-fire emergencies such as road traffic collisions and water rescues. Our fire investigators carried out over 100 investigations into the cause of fires, some of which led to prosecutions for arson and anti-social behaviour.

Building on success

Recently, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Authority has made substantial financial investment in the Service, and this has included new fire engines and upgraded cutting equipment, new breathing apparatus and lifejackets and approximately £1m worth of new firefighting equipment. It also includes the launch of a new Specialist Rescue Team, complete with rapid response vehicle, heavy rescue cutting equipment and a brand new rigid inflatable boat.

Keeping our communities safe

Although our firefighters are always ready to respond to incidents, a large part of the Service’s work involves trying to prevent fires starting at all. This includes working with our local communities through school visits, youth programmes, in partnership with other agencies and by attending local events to improve awareness of how people can keep themselves and their families safe.
