Reduce crime and fear of crime

Including this priority in the new Local Area Agreement (LAA) will ensure a renewed focus on delivering reductions to key crime types and anti-social behaviour (ASB), which are of most concern to the Nottinghamshire public.

Furthermore, inclusion in the LAA will:

  • enable local partnerships to align with new Government priorities
  • address the interlinked issues of community cohesion and health inequalities, such as drug treatment, alcohol misuse, accident prevention and early intervention in the criminal justice system.

In terms of numbers of various offences, dwelling burglary, vehicle crime and violent crime are well in excess of the regional and national rates.  While significant progress has been made in addressing acquisitive and drug-related crime, challenges remain around anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and car crime.

In terms of overall rates of crime, Nottinghamshire  had the second highest rate among all counties in England, at 65.2 per thousand in 2005-06 (British Crime Survey 2006).

Vehicle crime is a key area for attention, as crime rates are the highest in the country, with 16.5 per 1000 compared to a national average of 13.5.

Violent crime is also a concern as rates have increased by 8% between 2004 and 2007.
