Promote a viable economy

Promoting a viable economy is a key priority for Nottinghamshire given the impact this has in supporting the achievement of economic, environmental, social and health priorities.

The legacy of the structural changes within the county’s economy in the 1980s and 1990s are still being felt and the key challenges facing Nottinghamshire today are:

  • gross value added (GVA), an important measure of economic productivity, is growing more slowly in Nottinghamshire than in Nottingham itself or in the region as a whole
  • unemployment levels are relatively low but there is considerable variation across the county in economic activity and employment rates, with high number of residents on incapacity benefit and other working age benefits, often called 'hidden unemployment'
  • accessibility to employment particularly in the more rural areas of the county is an issue as are issues of adequate, affordable housing and housing demand being met for some communities are all issues.

Through both individual partner activities and the joint planning of approaches to issues such as business and housing growth the conditions for economic growth and addressing disadvantage will be enhanced. All partners, whether as funders, deliverers or employers, are responsible for supporting the development of a viable economy.
